REP. WINGARD ANNOUNCES ELECTION REFORM
PACKAGE
“Oregonians
deserve an elections system that’s fair, secure and accountable,” Rep. Wingard
said. “The Legislature must act on these measures as soon as possible to ensure
that the votes of all Oregonians are counted in upcoming
elections.”
The package of
bills
includes:
HB
2372: Ensure voters pamphlets are
delivered to every
HB
3430: Improve ballot security at ballot drop sites; currently
there are no safeguards for collecting, handling and delivering ballots by third
parties.
HB
3431: Establish a uniform system for
verification of signatures for initiative elections; currently voters do not
have the ability to validate their signatures on initiative
petitions.
HB
3432: Require proof of citizenship for
Oregonians registering to vote for the first
time.
HB
3433: Require the Secretary of State to
remove deceased voters from state voter rolls. An independent estimate by
Cascade Policy Institute suggests that a thousand deceased individuals are
currently considered active voters in
HB
3434: Allow mail-in ballots with
election-day postmarks to be counted. Currently, ballots must be received by 8
p.m. on Election Day in order to be
counted.
All of the bills
in the election reform package have been referred to the House Rules Committee
for consideration.
