REP. WINGARD ANNOUNCES ELECTION REFORM PACKAGE

SALEM—Rep. Matt Wingard (R-Wilsonville) today announced a package of bills he is supporting to reform and improve Oregon’s election system. Rep. Wingard said the package of bills is needed to strengthen the integrity of Oregon’s elections.

“Oregonians deserve an elections system that’s fair, secure and accountable,” Rep. Wingard said. “The Legislature must act on these measures as soon as possible to ensure that the votes of all Oregonians are counted in upcoming elections.”

The package of bills includes:

HB 2372: Ensure voters pamphlets are delivered to every Oregon voters, including those with private mailboxes.

HB 3430: Improve ballot security at ballot drop sites; currently there are no safeguards for collecting, handling and delivering ballots by third parties.

HB 3431: Establish a uniform system for verification of signatures for initiative elections; currently voters do not have the ability to validate their signatures on initiative petitions.

HB 3432: Require proof of citizenship for Oregonians registering to vote for the first time.

HB 3433: Require the Secretary of State to remove deceased voters from state voter rolls. An independent estimate by Cascade Policy Institute suggests that a thousand deceased individuals are currently considered active voters in Oregon.

HB 3434: Allow mail-in ballots with election-day postmarks to be counted. Currently, ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.

All of the bills in the election reform package have been referred to the House Rules Committee for consideration.
