Senator
Chip Shields
D-Portland
District 22
Thank you for visiting my webpage! It is the honor of a lifetime to be your new state senator.
I worked hard to represent inner North and Northeast Portland while I was your state representative from 2005 to 2009. Now I look forward to getting to know the concerns of new senate constituents west of I-5 and of those in the Cully neighborhood.
Faced with a $4 billion budget shortfall in the 2009 session, I made sure that funding for programs for children, seniors and those struggling with addiction and mental health issues were kept intact. As a member of the Joint Ways & Means budget committee, I helped to restore almost $84 million in drug treatment and community mental health budgets, maintained $10 million for Oregon Project Independence to help seniors, and prioritized $100 million to expand Head Start at places like Albina Head Start. With help from the Obama administration, and despite a 20% shortfall in state revenue, we passed a $6 billion K-12 budget, $600 million more than the Governor’s budget originally proposed. I helped to prioritize an historic $1.5 million investment in pre-apprenticeship training for women and people of color.
In the coming months, I will continue to work diligently to learn about the concerns of the entire senate district. If you’d like me to attend your association meeting, or want to schedule an appointment at my district office, please contact my staff at (503) 231-2564 or by email at sen.chipshields@state.or.us.
As always, please feel free to contact me if I can ever be of service to you or your family. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

State Senator Chip Shields
