REP. WINGARD LEADS HOUSE PASSAGE OF BILL TO HONOR FALLEN PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS WITH SPECIAL LICENSE PLATES

VIDEO: Watch Rep. Wingard's floor speech

The House of Representatives today passed HB 2512, sponsored by Rep. Matt Wingard (R-Wilsonville), to issue special license plates honoring fallen public safety officers. If signed into law, proceeds from the plate's surcharge will be deposited into the Police Memorial Trust to be used for travel expenses of family members and honor guard escort to attend national memorial services.

"This memorial license plate will not only show our support for the tens of thousands of public safety officers who work diligently everyday, it will also show our appreciation to the 171 public safety officers who have paid the ultimate price--and to their families who must bare burdens we could only begin to imagine," Rep. Wingard said.

Rep. Wingard introduced the bill on behalf of the family of Washington County Sheriff Detective Randy Nunnenkamp, who was killed in an off-duty accident. Detective Nunnenkamp, who investigated crimes against children, has been posthumously honored with awards and scholarships in his name.

The family, who were present for the Floor debate, requested the bill as a way to honor Detective Nunnemkamp and public safety officers who have served and sacrificed for their communities.

"Being a police officer, firefighter, or any of the other forms of public safety officers is a dangerous line of work-and these men and women do their job willingly," Rep. Wingard said.  "They are jobs that make our neighborhoods and communities safer--and they will not get rich doing it.  These special plates will give citizens a chance to show their support for the work our public safety officers do."

HB 2512, which passed on a 57 to 2 vote, now moves to the Senate.

BILLS ON THE MOVE...

House Bill 2229-A: This bill is the product of the Big Look Task Force, created by the Oregon Legislature to travel the state and ask Oregonians how we can improve our land use system.  Rep. Wingard sits on the House Land Use Committee and spent many hours negotiating this consensus bill.  Among other things, HB 2229-A allows counties to rezone mislabeled farm and forest land. The bill is supported by both Oregonians in Action and 1000 Friends of Oregon.
(Rep. Wingard voted YES)

House Bill 2011-A: Allows senior citizens to attend classes at Oregon public colleges and universities for free if the class has open seats.
(Rep. Wingard voted YES)

House Bill 2136-A: Bans cigarette vending machines in areas accessible to minors. These vending machines would still be available in places such as bars and taverns.
(Rep. Wingard voted YES)

House Bill 2673-A: Prohibits the use of "bot" software by scalpers to buy up most or all available concert tickets within seconds of their going on sale to the public.
(Rep. Wingard voted YES)

Teach Children to Save

Many Oregon banks participate in programs across the state to teach valuable financial savings lessons to children. This year, banks across America are accepting the Million Child Challenge to teach savings lessons to one million students. Since 1997, the program has connected more than 60,000 bankers across the country with 2.8 million students to create a generation of financially educated students.
Oregon now has 69 confirmed cases of H1N1 following testing by the State of Oregon Public Health Laboratory.

There are everyday actions you can take to stay healthy.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing by infected people.

If you get sick, it's recommended that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
